The Active Wellbeing Society launched The Brum Together campaign, which caught 650 tons of excess food. The food was used to make thousands of food packages and hot meals for vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

An army of 1,000 people helped produce and deliver 62,000 food packages and 23,000 hot meals were delivered to provide a lifeline to those in need during the pandemic.

Over 85 partners and local communities have come together to create a food aid network. One of the donors, Tesco, supports FareShare through its Community Food Connection program.

The Active Wellbeing Society supports people in disadvantaged areas of Birmingham and Solihull in the West Midlands. They aim to combat inequality, promote community development, and provide a range of free community activities and services.

Vicky Hemming, director of the Community Food Project at Active Wellbeing Society, said: “Donating excess food has been a key component in helping those most in need as well as reducing local waste.

“The donations help turn excess food into tasty, nutritious meals and recipe kits that are distributed in community cafes across town. The excess food and the presence of cafes help the Active Wellbeing Society to combat food waste, food poverty, diet-related problems and social isolation all at the same time. “
