The supermarket was fined £ 7.5 million today after inspectors discovered dozens of expired products in three city shops, all of which had expired.
District Judge Shamim Qureshi slammed the chain after Birmingham City Council accused the retail giant of “playing Russian roulette” with customers in an attempt to avoid prosecution and get the agency to “overcome every hurdle.”
The judge called Tesco Stores Ltd’s admission to 22 food safety and hygiene charges “the most reluctant admission of guilt in legal history”.
The company was tried in the Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, where it was fined a total of £ 7,560,000 and sentenced to pay £ 95,500 in law enforcement costs and a victim surcharge of £ 170.

In response, a Tesco spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that a small number of obsolete products were offered for sale in three stores in 2016/17. The safety of our customers is always a priority and these incidents are not representative of that.” We expect high security and quality standards in Tesco branches.
“We took immediate action to remedy this and we want to reassure our customers that we have robust procedures in place to ensure this doesn’t happen.”
