Watch: Vicious hammer attack on Handsworth taxi driver while video surveillance

This is the moment when a taxi driver “feared for his life” when he was hit on the head with a hammer in Handsworth.

He told BirminghamLive that he was hit three times by a man in a balaclava after leaving his house on Robert Road around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27.

When asked to be identified only as Mohammed, he was hospitalized with severe head injuries and is currently nursing his arm, which was broken when he was tired of defending himself during hand-to-hand combat.

In a shocking video up close, Mohammed is seen approaching his car when another man launches the savage attack.

“The person called out to me, ‘die, die, die’, but God wants me to somehow managed to get out of the area,” said the 33-year-old.

“I think he tried to kill me. He was outside in a silver BMW 3 Series SE for almost two hours before I got out of my house. I know this because after that I looked at my video surveillance and saw him waiting.

“He started hitting me with a hammer when I got into my car. I tried to defend myself but then he hit me on my elbow two more times. I ran to the end of my street and hid behind a car. I didn’t know what was going on. “

The attacker can be seen in CCTV footage at the top of this story escaping from the scene in a BMW. The driver crashed into railings near the Hutton Road / Robert Road intersection and part of the car’s bumper broke off. But the attacker was soon able to flee.

A blood soaked Mohammed went back to his house where his family, including his four-year-old son, were waiting for him.

“My son told his teachers about it at school and kept asking me about my arm, which was in a sling,” said Mohammed, who has had sleepless nights since the incident.

When asked if he had any enemies, Mohammed said that he did not and had no idea why anyone would want to hurt him.

“I am a hardworking family man. I pay my taxes and would not wish this to my worst enemy.

“We have to catch this person and bring them to justice – someone has to have CCTV footage or know something.”

Mohammed added that he felt disappointed and neglected by the police, who he said hardly spoke to him after the attack.

“It’s like they don’t care. If I died they would take it more seriously because it would be murder.

“My MOT garage has cameras that point to Church Hill Road, where the attacker probably came from, but only record for seven days before the footage is deleted. If the police had taken this seriously from day one, they would have they may now have a license plate. “”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the BirminghamLive officer visited the scene and gathered evidence immediately after the attack.

They said: “[A] The taxi driver was attacked just before 9 p.m. on Tuesday (April 27) on Robert Road in Birmingham.

“He was hospitalized for treatment for a head wound and a possibly broken arm.

“The officers were sent to the scene immediately and some evidence was recovered as part of our investigation. The investigation continues and officers are trying to contact the victim to provide a full explanation. “

A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman added: “We were called for reports of an attack on April 27th. An ambulance was there. Upon arrival, we discovered a patient, a man, who was being treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to the hospital for further treatment. “
