Toyota builds new supermini for internal combustion engines only

Toyota platform

Toyota has released plans for an upcoming supermini model that will be offered exclusively with internal combustion engines.

This contradicts the trend towards electrified drives. Toyota believes that keeping an internal combustion engine will make the car more “accessible” to customers.

The new car, which sits on the company’s GA-B platform, which the larger Yaris is based on, could replace the current Aygo, which is considered Toyota’s most compact model.

Toyota is committed to the city car segment in Europe by confirming a new A-segment model.

There’s a good chance the 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine that powers the current Yaris will find use in this new car, which comes with either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission.

The new model will increase the annual European production of cars supported by the GA-B platform to 500,000 units, which, according to Toyota, will ensure “valuable economies of scale”.

Toyota YarisThe Yaris uses the same platform as the upcoming supermini

It will be the third car to use the platform after the regular Yaris and the upcoming Yaris Cross, which is slated to hit the market later next year.

Although the Toyota Aygo sits on the same platform as the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, there are no plans for new versions of the latter two cars. Although the internal combustion engine-only option of this new model means it will likely produce more CO2, Toyota’s extensive lineup of hybrids and electric cars – including the Prius and RAV4 – means that a car can be introduced on just gasoline without getting too close to the company Approach -wide emission regulations.
