Rutland County Council has announced that the disruption caused in Oakham since a religious festival began last weekend and the “issues surrounding the event planning processes” will be reviewed in the coming months.

The Light and Life Convention, which started on Saturday at the Rutland Showground, has now ended and the 1,500 participants will leave the grounds today.

During the week, local residents expressed concern about the lack of police presence at the start of the event and the anti-social behavior caused by some participants.

Leicestershire police said four public order crimes were reported between Wednesday and Thursday, including abusive language, a person spat at and damage to a tree.

Alderman Oliver Hemsley, chairman of the council, said, “This week has presented our county with several challenges and highlighted some key issues that we must work together to resolve over the coming months.”

He said the problems had less to do with the event itself and more to do with disruptions in the city and issues related to “involving key agencies at an early stage”.

He said there were “difficult talks” going on, adding: “There are many bridges to be built in the weeks and months ahead and the Council, along with its partners and the venue, will play an important role in making this happen.”

Chris Collins, who runs the Rural Crime Rutland Facebook group, said residents were initially upset by the lack of police in the area but “increased” their presence after the first day.

“They said they had never seen so many cops in Oakham and that was going on all week,” he added.
