The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) was assisted today by heavily armed officers and specialized Garda units in an operation that targeted an organized crime gang that sold stolen vans, work vehicles, engines and other stolen car parts to drug trafficking.
The planned operation against the gang, targeted in more than a dozen Garda raids over the past three years, searched twelve locations in Co Longford, most of them in the Granard area.
“They are used to being targeted at this stage and in reality they are not making the same money as they used to be,” said a senior source.
“Once they were suspected of making over $ 300,000 in 18 months, but it’s not that lucrative for them anymore and the chop shops are not that busy,” the source added.
The gang leader is currently based in Northern Ireland and has a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) pending on several charges of handling stolen property.

The gang targeted by the CAB is also implicated in an ongoing family feud that has resulted in several violent incidents over the past year.
One of the main actors in the mob is a 30-year-old criminal who was present at the raids today but cannot be named for legal reasons as he faces serious charges in court.
“Investigations have revealed that this gang stole vans in both Ireland and the UK and attacked a number of industrial areas in north Dublin,” a senior source said.

“While this was one of the more lucrative aspects of their business, if an engine was stolen, they also made up to € 3,000 on each engine,” the source explained.
