Around £ 1 million has been invested in creating a 500 seat Indian restaurant that the owners hope will become one of the best in the region.
Work has been going on at the Tipu Sultan in Sherwood, Nottingham for a number of years.
Now the team behind the plans says it’s weeks before the opening.
Director Safdar Azam said construction was delayed by the pandemic linked to the condition of the building on Mansfield Road, which was previously a Fat Cat Bar and before that the Chestnut Tree Pub.
He said, “It had been empty for a while. When we got in, water dripped and destroyed the building.
“Everything we touched fell apart – so we made sure the restaurant we made would be here for the next 20 years.
“If we had a piece of land here and built it, it would have been cheaper than renovating.
“We thought it would cost about £ 300,000 and six months of labor and we would be good to go, but here we are two years later and we are over £ 1 million.”
The ground floor was redesigned with round niches and the first floor became a banquet area for larger celebrations
The non-alcoholic restaurant will have a large open kitchen where a team of 24 will prepare dishes such as Desi Chili Handi Chicken and Karahi Gosht Sultani.
Mr. Azam said, “We want people to come and enjoy the food. There are many bars and pubs in Sherwood. Have a drink then come here.
“The seating plan is more of a family restaurant so you can bring your children with you.
“We cook the food differently – not in 20 minutes, we cook overnight and serve it the next day,” he said.
“We want customers to come back at least twice a week after trying our food, so let’s look at the affordability page.
“If you come here, it won’t be on your budget.”
