Midwife who was pelted with eggs and flour by mindless guys as she drove to see patients

A midwife was pelted with eggs, flour and water by young people as she drove to see patients at risk.

Laney Holland was visiting mothers at risk from Covid when the pointless incident occurred.

She had lowered the roof and the windows of her silver Mercedes C-Class because of the scorching temperatures in the heat wave.

The 47-year-old NHS worker from Northampton was then bombarded with the messy rockets that covered her and her car.

She called the police after the Coventry attack last week.

She said, “I go into some really vulnerable and risky areas, but I never worry because I have a relationship with my patients, a mutual respect.”

The midwife was on her way to see patients

She explained the incident that she slowed her car as she approached a large puddle from a bubbling hydrant so as not to splash passers-by.

“As I slowed down, a flood of children and adults came up to me,” she said. “The first person pelted me with an egg and it hit me right in the eye. I wear contact lenses and really struggled to see.”

The midwife explained how she slowed down when she lost sight of one eye and the boys started pouring flour and water over her.

A bag of flour hit her head and she distracted and bumped her car against the side of the road.

She continued, “I said, ‘Guys, I wear a uniform and I have electronics in my front seat,’ but one of them just said, ‘So?’ and they all cheered and got on with the stuff. “

As she desperately tried to open her roof and windows, people continued to throw cans and bottles filled with water into the car, spilling liquid over the dials and buttons.

The dirty car

She drove with the top down because of the heat

“My car was completely ruined,” she said. “It must have only lasted about four minutes, but God, it felt like forever.”

She said the group, whose ages ranged from roughly nine to several full-grown adults, as well as several adult women, seemed completely out of control.

She said she only realized the gravity of the situation when she managed to drive off and stood in front of her patient’s door.

She added, “I was on autopilot. I didn’t even realize until I got up that my uniform was soaked, egg-soaked and covered in flour.”

And when she arrived, her patient was actually not there – although her husband invited her to clean up, which she politely refused.

Laney drove to a local gas station where she washed her car, and a friendly worker took pity on her and had her wash the egg out of her hair while a coworker made a replacement uniform.

She said her car was wrecked after the incident

She said she has since been overwhelmed with the support of friends and strangers after posting on Facebook about the incident.

And she was inundated with offers from local companies saying they would recondition her car for free to see if there was any permanent damage.

She said, “I think it might have been a prank that just got completely out of hand.

“I know it wasn’t a personal attack on me because some of the cars in front of me in the car wash had clearly seen it too.”

Laney said it might be because of her car or because she turned around and asked her to stop.

But she insists she drove around this area weekly and never had any problems.

She said, “I think it was just a really weird thing that really got out of hand. There are many signs of abuse of frontline workers in hospitals, but nothing in the community.

“Ten months ago they clapped for us and now they throw things at us?”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We received a call around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, July 21, about an attack on a street in Coventry.

“It is believed that a woman in her forties was beaten with eggs by a group of teenagers in her car.

“We have made an appointment to speak to the woman for more information.”
