Teenagers arrested after a car was stolen and children were still inside

Police say two teenagers are in custody on suspicion of kidnapping after a car was stolen in Birmingham and the owner’s two children are still inside.

The West Midlands Police (WMP) was made aware of the so-called “shocking incident” shortly after 5 pm when a man reported that his car had been stolen from the driveway with his two- and four-year-old boys.

“Officers from the areas of reaction, traffic and firearms were immediately dispatched along with our canine units and the helicopter to take part in the search,” said a statement from the force.

At one point, the stolen Seat Leon was seen driving the wrong direction on a dual carriageway before armed officers could bring it to a halt on the A38 Bristol Road near the Belgrave Interchange.

Two male suspects, both 15 years old, ran out of the car but were quickly arrested and arrested by police. You are being questioned on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and kidnapping.

“Fortunately, both children were found safe and sound in the car and reunited with their parents on the side of the road,” said WMP.

Force Incident Manager, Chief Inspector Lee Wiggan, said, “This type of incident is a parent’s worst nightmare, but luckily we were able to stop the car and reunite the family less than fifteen minutes after the theft.

“It is a fantastic result of a very serious, urgent incident. I would like to thank the officials involved and the West Midlands Ambulance Service for their assistance.”
