COLUMBIA, SC – Another earthquake shook the South Carolina Midlands Thursday morning.
The earthquake struck around 7 a.m. about 20 miles outside of Columbia, according to the United States Geological Survey. The magnitude 2.5 had its epicenter near Elgin.
This is the sixth earthquake since December 27, when a magnitude 3.3 quake was reported. On some other tremors, people said they were trembling and heard a loud bang. All seismic activity has been concentrated near Elgin or neighboring Lugoff. The other four earthquakes were 2.5 or less in magnitude.
A 2.5 magnitude earthquake is considered minor, according to seismologists. Quakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or less usually go unnoticed and are only recorded by a seismograph. A quake less than 5.5 magnitude is unlikely to cause any significant damage.
Earthquakes can occur in clusters, say seismologists.
